On most beaches in El Médano and on Tenerife smoking is prohibited (including e-cigarettes). Breaking the rules can result in a fine of up to €750.
Why is the ban so strict?
Since 2023, strict beach protection rules have applied on the Canary Islands. Smoking is treated as environmental pollution (cigarette ends in the sand). Beaches are monitored by CCTV and checked regularly by police and local enforcement officers.
Where can you smoke?
- ✓ In bars and restaurants (outdoor areas)
- ✓ On hotel and apartment terraces
- ✓ In designated smoking areas (where available)
- ✗ On the beach, in the sand, by the sea
