Throwing away cigarette ends, bottles, plastic or any litter on the beach in El Médano is punished with a fine of up to €750.
Why are the penalties so high?
Since 2023, very strict beach protection rules have applied on the Canary Islands. Every cigarette end or piece of rubbish in the sand counts as environmental pollution. Beaches are monitored by CCTV and checked regularly by police and local enforcement officers.
What is prohibited?
- ✗ Smoking and throwing cigarette ends on the beach
- ✗ Throwing away bottles, cans, plastic, packaging
- ✗ Leaving any litter in the sand
