Current alcohol limits (2026)
- General limit: 0.5 ‰ (0.25 mg/l in breath)
- New drivers (licence less than 2 years): 0.3 ‰ (0.15 mg/l)
- Professional drivers (goods over 3.5 t, buses): 0.3 ‰
What fines apply?
Up to 0.5 ‰
Fine €500 + driving ban up to 3 months
Over 0.6 ‰
Fine €1000, 6–12 months driving ban, possible criminal proceedings
Above 1.2 ‰ you face criminal proceedings, which can lead to imprisonment.
